Stormwater Retention Pond Maintenance Update

As we are coming off one of the worst Summers regarding algae and weed growth, we wanted to provide an update after consulting the pond maintenance company.

There are two ecological components contributing to the pond algae issue:

  1. The company has been working to treat the torpedo grass along the ponds edge with a systemic herbicide. The herbicide works its way through the plant and into the root system for a longer term and more effective control. As the torpedo grass dies, the dead material becomes a nutrient rich muck which release nutrients that feed algae blooms. It is a vicious cycle but very common on stormwater retention ponds in homeowner communities.

  2. The runoff from the drains and street as well as pet waste and grass clippings are truthfully the worst contributors to this condition. There are a few things that can be done to combat this, including nutrient remediation, muck removal, and native littoral plantings.

The maintenance company expects the latest treatment to be effective.

The pond committee will meet and evaluate further remediation and prevention options for Board consideration at the Fall Board meeting (to be scheduled).
